Hi there, my name is Melanie Dahling. Yes, it’s pronounced the fun way. No, don’t try to resist the urge. Make a meal out of it, I insist. Now that’s out of the way, let’s talk a little about the Dahling behind the name.
I’m a writer and performer with a knack for witty & entertaining content. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, I cut my teeth in my hometown’s robust stand-up comedy scene. While finding my voice as a comedic performer, I was honoured to highlight other creatives as the Arts and Culture Reporter for The Uniter.
In 2017 I moved to Toronto, where the rent is high, and everyone seems so angry. It’s exhilarating, it’s terrifying, it’s everything my small city self wanted and more.
After arriving in the big smoke, I applied my writing skills to a copywriting job with an e-commerce site. I wrote product descriptions, Instagram captions, blogs, and print ads. Between you me and the trees, I was also the resident go-to for drafting difficult emails.
As opportunities snowballed, I eventually found myself with a freelance career, something that continues to surprise and delight me. Writing for my diverse clientele has been such a fascinating process. It has also become a fantastic support to my work as a stand-up comedian/actor.
When COVID-19 hit, I was lucky enough to continue working as a freelance content writer. As is the case for so many, I began to reflect and re-evaluate. I’ve taken this time to chip away at a Fringe script, do a few online comedy shows, and refine my skills. I am currently a student at the Armstrong Acting Academy, as well as the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy.
I spend most of my days planning shows, sending off self-tape auditions, and writing copy or content for my clients. I look forward to building my resume and flexing some new skills in the upcoming year.
